Mario Ferraro has impressed the San Jose Sharks’ coaching staff so far in training camp — so much so that Bob Boughner said the second-year defenseman might be ready for a bigger role with the team at the start of the season.

Boughner said Ferraro was the Sharks’ best defenseman during the team’s controlled scrimmage Sunday, and would, as of now, have no problem putting him on one of San Jose’s top two defense pairs for its Jan. 14 season opener against the Arizona Coyotes. Ferraro was mainly on the Sharks’ third defense pair as a rookie last season.

“There’s major strides in his maturity and I think his confidence,” Boughner said. “I wouldn’t be surprised, opening night puck drop, that he’s not sitting in our top four if he keeps progressing in camp like he is.”

Right now, the Sharks’ top two defense pairs are presumed to be Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Erik Karlsson, and Radim Simek and Brent Burns. Like Vlasic and Simek, Ferraro is a left shot defenseman, but is also comfortable playing on the right side.

Boughner was later asked if that means he’s looking for more from some guys in his presumed top four defense group. Not necessarily, he said.

“I’m not saying anybody’s off. I’m just saying that you can tell Mario, he’s one of those guys that catches your eye every shift doing something.” Boughner said. “His energy and his intensity, those are the things you notice.”

Leonard, who played three years at UMass, was not placed on waivers Monday and played on the top line of the White team during the Sharks Teal vs. White scrimmage Sunday.

“He has high-end skill and he has speed, and I like him in that position on that top line,” San Jose coach Bob Boughner said after the scrimmage. “I’m sure there’s going to be some tinkering as we get through this compacted schedule, but Johnny did a good job and had a good camp and he deserves to be with the big club.”

The Sharks drafted Leonard in the sixth round with the 182nd overall pick in 2018 after his freshman season at UMass. He agreed to sign with San Jose last March as a junior, forgoing his final season of collegiate eligibility.

Leonard, who played at the former Cathedral High School in Springfield and with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers, left the Minutemen as the program’s fourth-leading goalscorer (56) and eighth in career points (105) after 106 games. He set the school’s Division I era scoring record with 27 goals as a junior.

He’ll re-join his former UMass teammate Mario Ferraro with the Sharks. Ferraro played in 61 games for San Jose last season, scoring two goals with nine assists. He was the 48th overall pick in 2017.

“I think Mario is a little mature beyond his years when it comes to his hockey sense,” Boughner said. “Mario has earned the right to be in the top four (defensive mix) based on how he played last year and how he’s come into camp here.”

The duo are two of 11 former Minutemen set to start the NHL season this week. Cale Makar won the Calder Trophy last season as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year in helping the Colorado Avalanche reach the Western Conference semifinals.

Jonathan Quick is entering his 14th season with the Los Angeles Kings. Conor Sheary signed a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals. East Longmeadow’s Frank Vatrano will start his fourth year with the Florida Panthers after being traded from the Bruins.

Justin Braun joined the Philadelphia Flyers after nearly a decade with the Sharks. Brandon Montour and Matt Irwin are in Buffalo with the Sabres. Joel Hanley will play for the Dallas Stars.

Regardless, Ferraro’s continued improvement in the eyes of the coaching staff is a nice insurance policy for the Sharks should anything happen to one of their more seasoned blueliners. The Sharks did not add a defensemen in free agency, and the candidates for the sixth and seventh defensemen jobs are largely inexperienced.

Ferraro was the Sharks’ top rookie last season. With a seemingly endless reservoir of energy, he was able to win an NHL job out of training camp. In 61 games, he averaged close to 16 minutes of ice time per night — sixth most among all Sharks defensemen.

Boughner said Ferraro, who had 11 points last season, looks more confident than he did at the 2019 camp.

“He’s got leadership qualities. I think he’s a guy that people gravitate to,” Boughner said. “He’s one of those guys, he brings life to every situation. He’s very likeable, the guys love having him around. I just think that one day, you’re going to see him wearing a letter.”

In the Sharks’ scrimmage Sunday, Ferraro had a goal for Team White with assists credited to winger Joachim Blichfeld and defenseman Nicolas Meloche. Joel Kellman also scored, as Team White won 2-0. Martin Jones and Alexei Melnichuk combined for the shutout, as the game was played in two 20-minute halves.

“It felt really good to be back in game situation-style. It’s been quite a while,” Ferraro said. “But to be out there, I was just really excited. It’s been a while since we’ve scrimmaged and played a real five-on-five.”

What does Ferraro see as his role right now?

“A lot of our (defensemen) are very offensive,” Ferraro said. “I feel like I can provide that as well, but it’s very important that I stay solid back there and defend the net as best as I can, and then that’ll lead to good offense.”

San Jose Sharks goalies Martin Jones and Devan Dubnyk had at least one thing in common as they began training camp together in Scottsdale, Ariz. this week.

As of Friday, it had been 300 days since either player had started a game. Jones’ last start came March 8 against the Colorado Avalanche at SAP Center in San Jose. That same night, about 350 miles south, Dubnyk was in net for Minnesota Wild against the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center in Orange County.

With that in mind, Bob Boughner said Friday that he expects Jones and Dubnyk to split goaltending duties in the early part of the season.

Starting Jan. 14 with their opener against the Arizona Coyotes, the Sharks will play eight games in 15 days. They’re scheduled to stay in Arizona and play the Coyotes again Jan. 16, followed by two games each against the St. Louis Blues, the Wild and the Avalanche from Jan. 18-28.

After that, Jones’ and Dubnyk’s roles, depending on how each goalie is playing, might become a bit clearer.

“We believe we have two good goalies, two No. 1 goalies, so we’re going to have to treat it that way for the first little part,” Boughner said “These guys, it’s been so long since they both played, that they’ve both got to see games.

It’s dense. Fifty-six games per team over the course of 121 days will take a harsher toll on some players than others. Tell you what, we’re going to find out who’s in shape and who isn’t pretty quick. More skaters are going to fall hurt more frequently. Some older individuals are going to adopt the “load management” approach and take games off – at least they should.

With each draft pick, fantasy managers should ask themselves: “Is this guy going to play regularly/not fall to pieces?” For instance, Kings defenseman Drew Doughty has sat out a total of three games since 2013-14. I like his odds of plowing through this compact campaign more than a less sturdy player (you know who they are). Without sacrificing fantasy upside, it’s worth taking extra care in drafting those more robust types.

The discrepancy in number of back-to-back sets for each team is also worth considering, particularly when selecting goaltenders. The San Jose Sharks have 12 such sets scheduled while the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins have only six. It isn’t ridiculous to suggest that netminder Devan Dubnyk – supposing he’s San Jose’s perceived No. 1 over Martin Jones – will sit more often than Tampa’s Andrei Vasilevskiy or New York’s Igor Shesterkin or Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry. In this shorter season, the difference between a goalie playing five to 10 more games than another will carry significant fantasy weight.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of flip-flopping and sharing the net early, and then hopefully one of those guys takes the net.”

Certainly Jones feel that it can be him, especially since he’s come to camp about as rested for a season as he’s been since he joined the Sharks in 2015.

From the 2015-16 season to the end of the 2019-20 regular season, no NHL goalie was busier. Jones started 292 regular season games in that span, plus all 60 of the Sharks playoff games. Dubnyk wasn’t far behind, with 305 combined starts for the Wild between the regular season and playoffs.

No one needs a reminder how the workload took its toll on Jones after he posted subpar .896 save percentages in each of the last two seasons.

Now, nearly 10 months removed from his last start, Jones is ready to put into practice what he’s worked on with goalie coach Evgeni Nabokov and the team’s goalie consultant, Adam Francilia, throughout the offseason.

In the summer, Jones spent more time with Francilia in Kelowna, British Columbia on his biomechanics.

“It’s another set of eyes,” Jones said of working with Francilia. “You get a different perspective when you work with different people. It’s a lot of different biomechanics stuff in the gym and on the ice where you just see different things and how you’re moving and making sure you’re doing it efficiently.

“It was great. I know I definitely saw some improvements and the body’s feeling really good.”

Ideally, from the Sharks’ perspective, both Jones and Dubnyk will feel rejuvenated and can push each other throughout the 56-game season.

“The game’s so fast right now and it’s played at such a high pace that it’s just tougher to play a lot of games,” Jones said. “Obviously if you can be fresh and have two goalies playing well, and they’re a little fresher, that’s obviously a good thing.”

PATTY AND THE KIDS: Patrick Marleau, 41, spent the first day of training camp on a line with center Dylan Gambrell, 24, and fellow winger John Leonard, 22.

To put that into perspective, Gambrell was less than a year old when Marleau was drafted by the Sharks in 1997. By the time Leonard was born in Aug. 1998, Marleau had already completed his first season in the NHL.

San Jose Sharks coach Bob Boughner was asked how the so-called third line of Noah Gregor, Ryan Donato and Matt Nieto looked in Friday night’s intra-squad scrimmage.

“They looked like our first line tonight,” Boughner said. “They look like they’ve got a little chemistry out there. The one thing that separates them out there right now is the speed.”

The Sharks came into training camp looking for another winger to play in their top six forward group. Donato started camp alongside Tomas Hertl and Evander Kane, but was later replaced by John Leonard, who has received positive reviews in that role so far.

But they also needed to revamp a third line that was now without Joe Thornton, who signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in October. Perhaps the Sharks couldn’t completely replace everything Thornton did for the team off the ice, but they needed to find someone who could best duplicate his offensive production.

So far in camp, Gregor, who showed flashes of his offensive capability in his first year as a pro last season, has earned kudos for his work so far as a centerman. Donato seems to have found a home and Nieto has burnished his reputation as a speedy and versatile winger.

The trio combined for two goals and two assists for Team Teal in their 5-3 win over Team White on Friday. The Sharks have their final scrimmage of training camp Sunday night.

“We’ve been together now for a couple of skates, and then the game today, I thought we played pretty solid,” Gregor said. “I definitely can bring some speed and then both guys, Nieto and Donato, have the ability to make plays. It was pretty fun out there tonight.”

Things could change, but it seems to be a safe bet at this point that the three will be together for the Sharks’ season-opener on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes. Regardless, Boughner feels the depth of his forward group will be faster than it was a year ago.

“They seem to be working together,” Boughner said of the trio. “Pucks are coming underneath with speed, and then they get into the offensive zone and they’re tough to stop because they’re cutting back and protecting pucks and doing everything at top speed.

The Sharks have also placed six players on waivers, likely for purposes of reassignment to the Barracuda or taxi squad. Forwards Kurtis Gabriel and Antti Suomela, as well as defenders Nicolas Meloche, Nick DeSimone, Trevor Carrick and Fredrik Claesson, should they clear waivers, are not likely to make the opening night rosters.

Claesson is the notable inclusion, as he signed with the Sharks only yesterday, though he was clearly a depth signing.

Opening Night rosters are due by tomorrow at 5 p.m. Eastern. Here’s where the Sharks’ roster stands, should all waived players be re-assigned:

“That’s a big advantage for us if we can get the third line being able to play against any line out there, but especially being able to produce offense.”

Nieto had something of a career rebirth in his three-plus seasons with the Avalanche.

Nieto was playing only occasionally for then-coach Pete DeBoer in the first half of the 2016-17 season, and was placed on waivers in January 2017 by the Sharks and given a chance to get a fresh start elsewhere. He was claimed by the Avalanche, then the worst team in the NHL by a wide margin.

Nieto had 15 goals and 26 points in 74 games in 2017-18 for the Avs, who went from 48 to 95 points in one year’s time and made the playoffs. Nieto remained a constant in Colorado’s lineup for the next two seasons as well.

“I think I just matured a lot as a player.” Nieto said. “When I was in Colorado, I found a role that I was successful at over the last number of years. Coming back here, I’m excited to be back around some of the guys that I played with and be back in San Jose and show the player that I am now.”

What Hertl has seen is a guy that’s added some muscle.

“His upper body’s huge,” Hertl said of Nieto. “I think he was working really hard to get it

“But he’s always had speed. Even before he went to Colorado, I actually liked to play with (Nieto) because he’s really fast and he’s good on the forecheck, but he can still make a play.”

NEW GROUPS TODAY: The Sharks shuffled up their practice groups Saturday, moving most of their NHL roster into one 20-player unit.

One notable in the top group was defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov, who, it appears, will be paired with Jake Middleton for Saturday’s practice at least. Notables in the second group were defensemen Radim Simek, Ryan Merkley and Brinson Pasichnuk and forwards Dylan Gambrell, Stefan Noesen, Antti Suomela and Fredrik Handemark.

Boughner said Simek skated Saturday for about 30 minutes, and that the team will decide at a later point whether he’ll scrimmage Sunday. Simek had missed two days of practice and Friday’s scrimmage with knee discomfort.

“I’d like to keep easing him in and getting him ready for Thursday night,” Boughner said, “so it was good to see him back on the ice.”

Boughner said earlier this week that he wanted his NHL players to all be practicing together soon, but Saturday’s groupings may not necessarily mean that everything has been decided. Simek, Noesen and Gambrell will also be with the big club barring something completely unforeseen.

“I think (the competitions) are becoming a little more clear,” Boughner said after Friday’s scrimmage. “We’re keying on a few different guys at certain positions and certain holes. Certain guys are going the right way and then there’s certain other guys that just may not be ready at this point in time, and that’s fine too. But it’s becoming more clear.”
