Mario Ferraro has impressed the San Jose Sharks’ coaching staff so far in training camp — so much so that Bob Boughner said the second-year defenseman might be ready for a bigger role with the team at the start of the season.

Boughner said Ferraro was the Sharks’ best defenseman during the team’s controlled scrimmage Sunday, and would, as of now, have no problem putting him on one of San Jose’s top two defense pairs for its Jan. 14 season opener against the Arizona Coyotes. Ferraro was mainly on the Sharks’ third defense pair as a rookie last season.

“There’s major strides in his maturity and I think his confidence,” Boughner said. “I wouldn’t be surprised, opening night puck drop, that he’s not sitting in our top four if he keeps progressing in camp like he is.”

Right now, the Sharks’ top two defense pairs are presumed to be Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Erik Karlsson, and Radim Simek and Brent Burns. Like Vlasic and Simek, Ferraro is a left shot defenseman, but is also comfortable playing on the right side.

Boughner was later asked if that means he’s looking for more from some guys in his presumed top four defense group. Not necessarily, he said.

“I’m not saying anybody’s off. I’m just saying that you can tell Mario, he’s one of those guys that catches your eye every shift doing something.” Boughner said. “His energy and his intensity, those are the things you notice.”

Leonard, who played three years at UMass, was not placed on waivers Monday and played on the top line of the White team during the Sharks Teal vs. White scrimmage Sunday.

“He has high-end skill and he has speed, and I like him in that position on that top line,” San Jose coach Bob Boughner said after the scrimmage. “I’m sure there’s going to be some tinkering as we get through this compacted schedule, but Johnny did a good job and had a good camp and he deserves to be with the big club.”

The Sharks drafted Leonard in the sixth round with the 182nd overall pick in 2018 after his freshman season at UMass. He agreed to sign with San Jose last March as a junior, forgoing his final season of collegiate eligibility.

Leonard, who played at the former Cathedral High School in Springfield and with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers, left the Minutemen as the program’s fourth-leading goalscorer (56) and eighth in career points (105) after 106 games. He set the school’s Division I era scoring record with 27 goals as a junior.

He’ll re-join his former UMass teammate Mario Ferraro with the Sharks. Ferraro played in 61 games for San Jose last season, scoring two goals with nine assists. He was the 48th overall pick in 2017.

“I think Mario is a little mature beyond his years when it comes to his hockey sense,” Boughner said. “Mario has earned the right to be in the top four (defensive mix) based on how he played last year and how he’s come into camp here.”

The duo are two of 11 former Minutemen set to start the NHL season this week. Cale Makar won the Calder Trophy last season as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year in helping the Colorado Avalanche reach the Western Conference semifinals.

Jonathan Quick is entering his 14th season with the Los Angeles Kings. Conor Sheary signed a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals. East Longmeadow’s Frank Vatrano will start his fourth year with the Florida Panthers after being traded from the Bruins.

Justin Braun joined the Philadelphia Flyers after nearly a decade with the Sharks. Brandon Montour and Matt Irwin are in Buffalo with the Sabres. Joel Hanley will play for the Dallas Stars.

Regardless, Ferraro’s continued improvement in the eyes of the coaching staff is a nice insurance policy for the Sharks should anything happen to one of their more seasoned blueliners. The Sharks did not add a defensemen in free agency, and the candidates for the sixth and seventh defensemen jobs are largely inexperienced.

Ferraro was the Sharks’ top rookie last season. With a seemingly endless reservoir of energy, he was able to win an NHL job out of training camp. In 61 games, he averaged close to 16 minutes of ice time per night — sixth most among all Sharks defensemen.

Boughner said Ferraro, who had 11 points last season, looks more confident than he did at the 2019 camp.

“He’s got leadership qualities. I think he’s a guy that people gravitate to,” Boughner said. “He’s one of those guys, he brings life to every situation. He’s very likeable, the guys love having him around. I just think that one day, you’re going to see him wearing a letter.”

In the Sharks’ scrimmage Sunday, Ferraro had a goal for Team White with assists credited to winger Joachim Blichfeld and defenseman Nicolas Meloche. Joel Kellman also scored, as Team White won 2-0. Martin Jones and Alexei Melnichuk combined for the shutout, as the game was played in two 20-minute halves.

“It felt really good to be back in game situation-style. It’s been quite a while,” Ferraro said. “But to be out there, I was just really excited. It’s been a while since we’ve scrimmaged and played a real five-on-five.”

What does Ferraro see as his role right now?

“A lot of our (defensemen) are very offensive,” Ferraro said. “I feel like I can provide that as well, but it’s very important that I stay solid back there and defend the net as best as I can, and then that’ll lead to good offense.”

San Jose Sharks coach Bob Boughner was asked how the so-called third line of Noah Gregor, Ryan Donato and Matt Nieto looked in Friday night’s intra-squad scrimmage.

“They looked like our first line tonight,” Boughner said. “They look like they’ve got a little chemistry out there. The one thing that separates them out there right now is the speed.”

The Sharks came into training camp looking for another winger to play in their top six forward group. Donato started camp alongside Tomas Hertl and Evander Kane, but was later replaced by John Leonard, who has received positive reviews in that role so far.

But they also needed to revamp a third line that was now without Joe Thornton, who signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in October. Perhaps the Sharks couldn’t completely replace everything Thornton did for the team off the ice, but they needed to find someone who could best duplicate his offensive production.

So far in camp, Gregor, who showed flashes of his offensive capability in his first year as a pro last season, has earned kudos for his work so far as a centerman. Donato seems to have found a home and Nieto has burnished his reputation as a speedy and versatile winger.

The trio combined for two goals and two assists for Team Teal in their 5-3 win over Team White on Friday. The Sharks have their final scrimmage of training camp Sunday night.

“We’ve been together now for a couple of skates, and then the game today, I thought we played pretty solid,” Gregor said. “I definitely can bring some speed and then both guys, Nieto and Donato, have the ability to make plays. It was pretty fun out there tonight.”

Things could change, but it seems to be a safe bet at this point that the three will be together for the Sharks’ season-opener on Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes. Regardless, Boughner feels the depth of his forward group will be faster than it was a year ago.

“They seem to be working together,” Boughner said of the trio. “Pucks are coming underneath with speed, and then they get into the offensive zone and they’re tough to stop because they’re cutting back and protecting pucks and doing everything at top speed.

The Sharks have also placed six players on waivers, likely for purposes of reassignment to the Barracuda or taxi squad. Forwards Kurtis Gabriel and Antti Suomela, as well as defenders Nicolas Meloche, Nick DeSimone, Trevor Carrick and Fredrik Claesson, should they clear waivers, are not likely to make the opening night rosters.

Claesson is the notable inclusion, as he signed with the Sharks only yesterday, though he was clearly a depth signing.

Opening Night rosters are due by tomorrow at 5 p.m. Eastern. Here’s where the Sharks’ roster stands, should all waived players be re-assigned:

“That’s a big advantage for us if we can get the third line being able to play against any line out there, but especially being able to produce offense.”

Nieto had something of a career rebirth in his three-plus seasons with the Avalanche.

Nieto was playing only occasionally for then-coach Pete DeBoer in the first half of the 2016-17 season, and was placed on waivers in January 2017 by the Sharks and given a chance to get a fresh start elsewhere. He was claimed by the Avalanche, then the worst team in the NHL by a wide margin.

Nieto had 15 goals and 26 points in 74 games in 2017-18 for the Avs, who went from 48 to 95 points in one year’s time and made the playoffs. Nieto remained a constant in Colorado’s lineup for the next two seasons as well.

“I think I just matured a lot as a player.” Nieto said. “When I was in Colorado, I found a role that I was successful at over the last number of years. Coming back here, I’m excited to be back around some of the guys that I played with and be back in San Jose and show the player that I am now.”

What Hertl has seen is a guy that’s added some muscle.

“His upper body’s huge,” Hertl said of Nieto. “I think he was working really hard to get it

“But he’s always had speed. Even before he went to Colorado, I actually liked to play with (Nieto) because he’s really fast and he’s good on the forecheck, but he can still make a play.”

NEW GROUPS TODAY: The Sharks shuffled up their practice groups Saturday, moving most of their NHL roster into one 20-player unit.

One notable in the top group was defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov, who, it appears, will be paired with Jake Middleton for Saturday’s practice at least. Notables in the second group were defensemen Radim Simek, Ryan Merkley and Brinson Pasichnuk and forwards Dylan Gambrell, Stefan Noesen, Antti Suomela and Fredrik Handemark.

Boughner said Simek skated Saturday for about 30 minutes, and that the team will decide at a later point whether he’ll scrimmage Sunday. Simek had missed two days of practice and Friday’s scrimmage with knee discomfort.

“I’d like to keep easing him in and getting him ready for Thursday night,” Boughner said, “so it was good to see him back on the ice.”

Boughner said earlier this week that he wanted his NHL players to all be practicing together soon, but Saturday’s groupings may not necessarily mean that everything has been decided. Simek, Noesen and Gambrell will also be with the big club barring something completely unforeseen.

“I think (the competitions) are becoming a little more clear,” Boughner said after Friday’s scrimmage. “We’re keying on a few different guys at certain positions and certain holes. Certain guys are going the right way and then there’s certain other guys that just may not be ready at this point in time, and that’s fine too. But it’s becoming more clear.”

Brent Burns needs more from the San Jose Sharks if he is to truly cement his legacy.
There is no doubt that, when all is said and done, Brent Burns will go down as one of the best offensive defensemen in the modern era of the National Hockey League.

Agree or not, the stats tell the story and back that fact up with Burns currently leading all active NHL defensemen with 694 career points, with Chicago Blackhawks blueliner Duncan Keith second with 610 points and Burns’ Sharks teammate Erik Karlsson third with 603.

Brent Burns Jersey

Burns’ 694 points (210 G, 484 A) in 1,113 career regular season games has him looking up at the top 10 all-time NHL defensemen when it comes to career points, with Hall of Famer Chris Chelios sitting in 10th spot with 948 career points.

That list features the pantheon of all-time great NHL defensemen, with the legendary Ray Bourque, without doubt one of the best to ever do it, sitting pretty atop the list with 1,579 career points.

Now, it is almost impossible at this point that Burns will probably ever threaten Bourque’s record, and Burns is also unlikely to surpass the legendary former New York Rangers blueliner Brian Leetch, who is No. 8 with 1,028 career points.

However, and I drew inspiration for this story after reading this breakdown piece by The Hockey News on the all-time and active leaders in points by defensemen, Burns can still cement his legacy as one of the best offensive blueliners in his own right.

He can also really add to his case as a true San Jose Sharks icon with a strong finish to his career, but the bearded legend needs more from his team in order to achieve both.

Although you can make a case that Burns is half-man, half-bear given his appearance and his lifestyle, he is 35-years-old and, unless you are Tom Brady, father time defeats all eventually and the veteran may be running out of time to put a pretty bow on his career.

Authentic Brent Burns Jersey

Brent Burns, D (NHL.com rank: 64) — After scoring an NHL career-high 83 points (16 goals, 67 assists) in 82 games in 2018-19 to lead all defensemen, his production dipped last season (45 points in 70 games) with the San Jose Sharks missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Burns is an obvious bounce-back candidate considering his heavy shot volume (3.2 shots on goal per game last season; 3.7 per game since 2014-15) and elite pedigree at his position (three seasons with at least 75 points, most among active defensemen).

[Sharks 31 IN 31: Season preview | 3 Questions | Top prospects | Behind the Numbers]

Erik Karlsson, D (81) — Burns is the leading scorer among NHL defensemen since 2014-15 (406 points in 480 games), but Karlsson leads the position in points per game (0.87; Burns: 0.85) over that span (minimum 75 games). Karlsson, a perennial fantasy standout with the Ottawa Senators earlier in his career, has dealt with injuries in each of his two seasons with the Sharks. If Karlsson benefits from the extended rest (San Jose hasn’t played a game since Mar. 11) and remains with Burns on the first power-play unit, each defenseman can easily finish with at least 60 points and among the top five fantasy players at the position.

Evander Kane, LW (95) — The left wing led the Sharks in goals last season (26 in 64 games) and is one of the best fantasy players at his position for multicategory coverage. Kane always has a high shot volume; his 216 SOG last season were second on the Sharks behind Burns (225) and he has 3.6 SOG per game in his NHL career. Kane had his best power-play point totals in each of the past two seasons (18 PPP last season; 11 in 2018-19) and adds hits (2.3 per game in career) and penalty minutes (122 last season).

31 in 31: San Jose Sharks

Tomas Hertl, C/LW (111) and Logan Couture, C (118) — The Sharks top two centers are safe fantasy picks in middle rounds of any fantasy draft. Each dealt with injury last season but had an NHL career high in points in 2018-19 (Hertl: 74 in 77 games; Couture: 70 in 81 games). If Burns and Karlsson rebound, Hertl and Couture should see collective success with them on the first power-play unit. It’s also worth noting Hertl had by far his best goal total in 2018-19 (35; previous best was 22); Couture has three seasons of at least 31 goals (including an NHL career-high 34 in 2017-18).

Cheap Brent Burns Jersey

Another major obstacle is the fact that the Sharks appear to have fallen off a cliff over the past couple of seasons, going from making the Western Conference Final in 2018-19 to missing the expanded postseason this past year.

They completely regressed as a team and now have to forge a new identity after losing two iconic faces of the franchise in consecutive years in Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton, with the latter signing for the Toronto Maple Leafs this past offseason.

There are also still major question marks in goal with Martin Jones a shadow of his former self, while the trade for Minnesota Wild netminder Devan Dubnyk hardly quashes or quells any of those fears.

As a result, the Sharks are somewhat an unknown quantity heading into the 2020-21 season and I haven’t seen much improvement to an offense that was ranked 27th in the entire NHL during the 2019-20 regular season, averaging 2.57 Goals For Per Game.

Youth Brent Burns Jersey

And, with Erik Karlsson playing on one leg and having yet to fully reach peak Erik Karlsson with the Sharks, there’s no guarantees that San Jose will be a Playoff team next year.

If that’s the case then that could harm Burns’ legacy with the Sharks who failed to win a Stanley Cup with this core, although they came close in 2016, while the defenseman could be hindered when it comes to his personal quest to pad out his stats and emerge as the best blueliner of the modern era from a statistical point of view.

<a rel=

Likely to stave off Duncan Keith, Ryan Suter and Shea Weber due to age, the likes of Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang and John Carlson could overtake Burns in career points with another few strong productive years.

That could diminish Burns’ remarkable career and achievements, somewhat, while if he isn’t surrounded by a competitive team then he isn’t likely to get close to Chris Chelios‘ total of 948 career points, which would certainly make us look at Brian Burns in a different light when it comes to his legacy.

Now, granted, I don’t think Burns will catch Chelios at this point although, given how he plays the game and how he takes care of his body, he could certainly come close with a final few big years production wise.

After all, he still plays a key role on the power play despite the presence of Karlsson who thrives on the man advantage, while Burns has one of the best releases from the point in the NHL right now.

However, if he’s forced to tone down his offensive game in order to focus on keeping the puck out of the net in his own end due to the inabilities of his teammates, then that won’t help in the quest to establish his legacy as one of the best to do it.

Just look at the 2019-20 season when, after recording 67 points (12 G, 55 A) in 2017-18 and a career-high 83 points (16 G, 67 A) in 2018-19, Burns’ offensive game fell off a cliff this past year with just 45 points (12 G, 33 A) in 70 games.

NEXT: Are the Dallas Stars being underrated?
In other words, Brent Burns clearly struggles when he is on a bad team given that he has to do more defensively, and if the San Jose Sharks can’t right the ship soon then that might harm the overall legacy of their current all-time points leader as a defenseman, who still has a chance to pad out his stats, make some history and rubber-stamp his place in the annals of NHL history.
